TOURISM

Brasov (Kronstadt in German) is one of the most important town in Romania economically, culturally and touristically. Brasov is historical mentioned in official papers from 1294. In 1399 the first Romanian School has been established in Schei. It is also home to a printing press which had an important role for the local and national culture development and promoting literature in that period.

Brasov (the town from the foothills of Tampa) is located in the heart of Romanian Country surrounded by mountains.

Brasov is the favourite tourist destination in Romania, being placed in the center of Romania and gives the opportunity to visit monuments and museums.

Brasov is a rich historical town and inviting you to discover a part of it’s interesting history by visiting the following sights:

  • The Black Church (Romanian: Biserica Neagră), a celebrated Gothic site - the building is dating from 1477, when it replaced an older church (demolished around 1385). Its acquired the name after being blackened by smoke from the 1689 great fire.

  • The First Romanian School, (Romanian: Prima şcoală românească) is located on the grounds of the 16th century church of St. Nicholas, itself located in the historic district of Şchei, now part of the city of Braşov. It is also home to a printing press, Bible, and what can be loosely described as the first school magazine. The next door museum houses a variety of first Romanian books and the first printing press.

  • The First Romanian School Museum. This is the place where most of the first printed books in Romanian language were printed by Deacon Coresi during 1588-1665. This is the reason why a statue representing Coresi was erected in courtyard. The building comprises "The Coresi room" where are held printings telling the story of the beginning of the typography in Brasov and " The Anton Pann classroom".

  • Şchei, the historically Romanian neighborhood outside of the old walled city.

  • The Orthodox cathedral, built in 1858.

  • Tâmpa, a hill in the middle of the city (900m above sea level), a sightseeing spot near the old city center.

  • The "Braşov Citadel Fortress" - Cetăţuia Braşovului

  • The nearby Bran Castle, attracting many fans of Dracula, and often (but incorrectly) said to have been the home of Vlad the Impaler.

  • Poiana Braşov, mainly a ski resort, but also a sightseeing spot.

  • Râşnov Fortress, above the nearby town of Râşnov, is a restored peasant fortress
